Nine Carols: Coming Soon
The book version of my “Nine Carols and an Advent Overture” is at the printer. Publication date is 1 November. The book, artisanal in feel (hand-stitched and ), has been designed by typographer Gerhard Bachfischer and features illustrations made by Gerhard in response to Mark’s carols (and including pieces of the composer Alan Holley’s handwritten scores, and of course the birds that sing inside most of the carols). Mark wrote the carols for Holley to score for the Australian Chamber Choir, who gave one of the carols its premiere in December 2022. Although the poems are timeless, the book is published to coincide with a performance by Fiore Ensemble of three of the carols and the overture on 19 November 2023 in Richmond. It is also the first book published by 5 Islands, a beloved Australian poetry press founded by Ron Pretty and now revived by Mark Tredinnick and Steve Meyrick.
